ABSTRACT
Recent advancements, with respect to structural technologies and modern open-plan floor layouts, have resulted
in floor structures that are more susceptible to human-induced vibrations. Solutions to these vibration problems
include traditional methods such as adding mass and stiffness or more sophisticated techniques such as active
vibration control. This paper presents the results of analytical studies of active control of human-induced vibration
on a floor slab, together with some experimental results from corresponding laboratory measurements. The
structure used in this study is a post-tensioned concrete slab strip constructed in laboratory conditions. Dynamic
tests on the slab strip have yielded its modal properties that provide the foundation for the analytical studies
involving active control of lumped-parameter structural models. The active control algorithms used comprise
direct-output feedback techniques, together with a proposed response-dependent feedback gain. Improved
performance of the system is demonstrated compared with the fixed gain feedback techniques that have been
