The Bob and Rob Show Study Guide Lesson 139: The Black Death May 25, 2008 SHOW NOTES We take a morbid trip down death’s lane as we talk about pestilence, plague and the Black Death. Cheer up! PHRASAL VERBS IDIOMS to ward off something or someone 1) To try to prevent something dangerous or unpleasant, from affecting or harming you e.g.: In the middle ages, many people thought prayer was the best way to ward off the plague. Note: this phrasal verb is transitive, which means it takes a direct object, and can be separated e.g.: It is an old common belief that garlic can ward vampires off. IDIOM: 1) (to be) black and blue? To be covered in bruises so that ones body and/or face is literally black and blue e.g.: the social services took in the abused child because his face was black and blue. Fortunately, the police arrested the father, who was responsible for the beatings. 2) black and white To be of the view that something is absolutely right or wrong, either good or bad, with no grades or variation in-between. In other words, having no grey and ambiguous area e.g.: It is difficult to have a reasonable argument with fundamentalists since their views are so black and white! BONUS IDIOM: Black sheep of the family To be considered an outsider or outcast due to certain negative qualities or behavior that does not conform with ones family. In other words, to be different, disreputable and undesirable and shameful to your family e.g.: He was the black sheep of the family after he left home to feed his drug habit. AJESS Popular misconceptions: Describing false information that is largely believed by many people can be done by using the structures below to form the beginning of a sentence. The second part of the sentence should show that what many people think is in fact a misconception, or, in other words, is wrong: 1) many people think the plague is no longer around - but in fact hundreds of people a year still die of the plague. 2) some peo
