PHRASAL VERBS IDIOMS to perk someone/something up 1) To either become more lively or to make someone else more lively or cheerful e.g.: A cold shower soon perks you up in the morning after a night out. 2) To make something go up in value or improve its worth e.g.: Hopefully after this latest credit crunch, house prices will perk up in the USA. 3) To make something more attractive or more appealing or more interesting e.g.: Do you have any suggestions for perking up my cooking? IDIOM: to lose ones head To lose control of your emotions because you become too angry about something e.g.: I completely lost my head when I found out my girlfriend cheated on me! The literal meaning is to have your head chopped off e.g.: several wives of King Henry VIII lost their heads. BONUS IDIOM: to get cold feet This means a last minute feeling of reluctance, or to have reservations about doing something, or before entering something that is usually a very big or important step in your life. It can often collocate with marriage, which is obviously a major life decision e.g.: I dont know about you, Rob, but if I were to do a bungee jump, Im sure Id get cold feet just before it. GRAMMAR BLUES This week we look at the subjunctive mood: This unique structure is used to describe things and events that may not happen, or events that we may hope will happen, or that we imagine might happen. Here are the forms: the present-tense of the verb to be is: I be, you be, he be, we be, and they be. For example: The doctor suggested that she not be let out of hospital for another two weeks. the past-tense of the verb to be is: I were, you were, he were, we were, and they were. For example: If I were a millionaire Id live in Paris and drink the most expensiv
