Application Report DLPA021A–January 2010–Revised October 2011 Using the DLP Pico 2.0 Kit for Structured Light Applications ABSTRACT The term “structured light” generally refers to the process of projecting a known pattern of pixels onto a scene or object, usually using a projector, laser scanner or laser interference-based stripe generating system. When combined with a synchronized camera, a structured light projector can enable many interesting applications, including: highly accurate 3D surface scanning, dynamic scene illumination, distortion correction, numerous types of advanced human/machine interfaces, and many more new and exciting applications. Since the mid-1990s, when low cost/high quality digital projectors first became widely available, the area of structured light and the more general category of projector/camera applications, have been hotbeds of university and industry research (for some examples, see ). DLP projectors long have been the tool of choice for structured light projection, due to unmatched pixel sharpness, contrast and other critical figures of merit for projector/camera systems.
