MODELLLING ALUMINIUM ALLOY PLATES Problem Definition The plates analyzed in this chapter are made of aluminium alloy. The material properties are show in Table 2.1. Young’s modulus E11(GPa)Tensile strength σT(MPa)Poisson’s ratio ν12Maximum strainAluminium Alloy804000.3310% Table 2.1 Material Properties of aluminium alloy. The dimensions of the two aluminium plates are shown in Figure 2.1 below. They are 150 mm long, 30mm wide and 2mm thick. One of the plates has no central hole; another plate has a 5mm diameter central hole. Figure 2.1 Dimensions of aluminium plates. Tensile loads on the plates are shown in Figure 2.2. Figure 2.2 Tensile loads on aluminium plates. The problem is to calculate the strength of the notched laminate plate. Analytical Calculations Holes in plates may cause stress concentrations. To calculate the strength of a notched plate, the stress concentration around the hole should be understood. The research shows that the largest stresses occur at two nearest points to the edge of the hole, and if a straight line goes through these two points, the line may perpendicular to the load stress direction. The stress at the edge of the hole is given by equation 2.1. MACROBUTTON MTEditEquationSection2 Equation Chapter 2 Section 1 SEQ MTEqn \r \h \* MERGEFORMAT SEQ MTSec \r 1 \h \* MERGEFO
