ChineseMedicalJournal2014,127fn) 2037 Originalarticle o一ecompressio‘nal■oneversusc1IeC0m DreSSl●0nwi-t…hlnst·rum ente·dlInusto‘n foryoungpatientswithsingle-levellumbardischerniation： ashort-term prospectivecomparativestudy SunZhuoran，LiWeishi，ChenZhongqiang，GuoZhaoqing，QiQiang，ZengYan，SunChuiguoandLiuNing Keywords：youngpatients,singlelevel,lumbardischerniation,decompressionalone,prospectivestudy Background Foryoungpatients．thesurgicalmethodforJumbardischerniationremainscontroversia1．Theaim ofthis studywastoprospectivelydeterminethe short-term clinicaloutcomeaftersurgeryforyoungpatientswithlumbardisc herniation． Methods Inthisprospectivecomparative studybetweenApril2010 andAugust2011，atotalof80patientsunderwent primary surgeryatasinglelevelforlumbardischerniation．Thepatientsweredividedintowt ogroups：decompression alone anddecompressionw ith instrumented fusion．An independentexaminercIinicallyevaluated the patients at preoperationandat1，3，6，and 12monthsaftersurgery．Thepatientsfilledoutthe instrumentsforbackandlegpain usingaVisualAnalogScale(VAS)，OswestryLowBackPainDisabilityQuestionnaire(ODI)，andJapaneseOrthopaedic AssociationfJOA)scores．Thedifferencesbetweenthewtogroupswereanalyzed． Results ThemeanageofalIthepatientsatthetimeofsurgerywas33．7years．Ofthe80patients．38patientsundewrent decompressionaloneand42patientsunderwentposteriorlumbarinterbodyfusion．Increasingcomplexityofsurgery was associatedwithalongersurgerytime，greaterbloodloss，andalongerhospitalstayaftersurgery．Bothmethodsofsurgery independentlyimprovedoutcomescomparedwithbaselinestatusbasedonVAS，ODI，andJOAscores(PO．O5)，andno significantdifferenceswerefoundbewt eenthewtogroupsatmostofthemeasuringpointsintime，althoughpatientswith decompressionalonehadahigherJOAscore(P=0．016)andhigherJOArecoveryrate(P=0．010)atthe3-monthfollow— up． C
