Unit 1 Text A: The Unforgettable Cartoonist Charles Monroe Schulz was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on November 26, 1922. Schulz’s fascination with comic strips began early when he read the Sunday comics with his father each week, from four different newspapers. His father and mother, both encouraged young Charles to enroll in a correspondence course on cartooning at, what is now, the Art Instruction Schools, Inc., in Minneapolis. Many years later, Charles Schulz became one of American most endearing artists whose characters became recognized and loved all over the world. Schulz passed away at age 78 on Saturday, February 12, 2000, just over 3 months before the National Cartoonists Society was to honor him, with a lifetime achievement award, at their New York Convention on May 27. His last comic strip ran in the Sunday editions on Feb. 13, and showed Snoopy at his typewriter with the other Peanuts regulars, writing a “Dear Friends” letter thanking his readers for their support. In a television interview on December 29, 1999, when discussing his retirement, Schulz was moved to tears as he read his farewell letter. “I have been grateful over the years for the loyalty of our editors and the wonderful support, and love, expressed to me by fans of the comic strip,” Schulz wrote. “Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy ... how can I ever forget them ...”As with every comic strip he created, the letter ended with his signature. His career in cartooning was interrupted in 1943 when he was drafted into the army and shipped to Europe for World War Two. After leaving the United States Army in 1945, he took a job as an art teacher at Art Instruction Inc., where he developed the characters Charlie Brown, Linus, and Freida, who later became the “PEANUTS” comic strip. Schulz’s first regular comic strip, “Li’l Folks” was published in 1947 by the St. Paul Pioneer Press. It was in this strip that Charlie Brown first appeared, as well as a dog that looked much like Snoopy. I
