Ella Fitzgerald The little girl was very pretty, and slim, and her name was Ella Fitzgerald. She had such a perfect sense of pitch that she could tell when one player out of an entire orchestra played a wrong note. She was born to sing and she learned to sing by “ear”. As time went by, the little girl was 14 years old. Her voice was as lovely as a bird. Her figure was as fit as a fiddle, but unfortunately, the girl suffered from a kind of illness which caused her to gain weight. The children at school laughed at her as she became fatter and fatter. She felt upset and always shut herself in her room, crying alone. Her grandfather urged her to forget about her weight and to concentrate on developing her lovely voice. She took the advice and soon began winning prizes at the amateur nights put on by the local theater. Ella wanted to become a professional singer, but her family thought it would be better if she studied nursing. Her parents felt her enormous size might be too much of a handicap for a successful stage career. Ella started nurses training, but she still wanted to pursue her dream to sing. She believed, someday, people would forget her looks when they heard her voice. So, the girl went to Broadway and soon got a small part in a musical comedy. She still endured some jokes about her weight ,and even though they hurt her deeply, she refused to give up. One night, when backstage she received a note saying that a man would like to see her. At first she was afraid it might be a joke, but the man who wanted to see her that night changed her life forever .He was Ted Collins of the Columbia Record Company.
