10.1111/j.1759-6831.2011.00157.x Ataxonomicre-assessmentintheChineseBupleurum(Apiaceae): Insightsfrommorphology,nuclearribosomalinternaltranscribed spacer,andchloroplast(trnH-psbA,matK)sequences Chang-BaoWANG Xiang-GuangMA Xing-JinHE CollegeofLifeScience,SichuanUniversity,Chengdu610064,China AsoneofthebiggenerainApiaceae,BupleurumL.hasreceivedconsiderableattentionfromplant taxonomists.Nevertheless,therearestillmanygapsinourknowledgeofthisgenus,especiallyofthosespecies endemictoChinathathaveoftenbeenexcludedfrompreviousstudies.Inspiteofafewrecentstudiesonthe phylogenyandclassificationoftheChineseBupleurum,themostessentialproblemofspeciesdelimitationstill remainsunresolved.Were-evaluatethetaxonomyoftheChineseBupleurumusingmorphologicalandmolecular evidence.Carefulobservationsoflivingplantsgrowingthefieldandherbariumspecimensweremadetounderstand themorphologicalvariationandtoensurespeciesidentificationforthemolecularanalysis.Phylogeneticanalyses werecarriedoutonsequencedataofnuclearribosomalintemaltranscribedspacer(nrlTS),trnH-psbA,andmatK, usingparsimonyandBayesianapproachestoevaluatespeciesrelationships.AnalysesofbothnrlTSandcombined datasetsofthethreeregionsrevealedthefollowingresults:(i)theChineseBupleurumspeciesweredividedintotwo majorlineages;and(ii)mostspecieswerewelldefined,butsometraditionalinter-andinfraspecificrelationships werenotsupported.Ourresults,alongwiththeresultsofpreviousworkssupportthattheChineseBupleurumspecies werederivedfromtwodifferentlineagesandshouldbeplacedinNevesandWatson’ssubgenusBupleurum.Our detailedtaxonomicre-assessmentofseveralChinesespeciesresultedinnewtaxonomicrecombinationswithrank changesforthreespecies:Bupleurumtenerum,B.amplexicaule,andB.franchetii;newcombinationforonevariety, B.smithiivar.flaviflorum;andthedescriptionofonevarietyandonespecies,B.sten
