Teresa Teng —The 20th century Chinese pop music milestone landmark Abstract Teresa Teng was a legendary pop singer in mainland of China in the 20th century, she created an “Teresa era” with her beautiful songs, she played an important role in the Chinese mainland pop music, she was the most popular singer in the early period of the reform and opening up, her songs are mainly love songs, the contents are usually about our daily life, her songs sound emotional and easily arouse people’s common feelings. Her early songs are started as folk music, for example “country roads”, “Feng Yang Flower Drum”, afterwards she did some remixed songs about the Old Shanghai period like “cordate telosma”, “when will you return” and also some “crying” style in Japanese songs like “crying rain drops”, “empty harbor”, the American and Japanese style are essential parts of her own singing style. She used “breath singing” and “trill singing” skills to form her own “tune zone uniting”, “freestyle high tunes”, “enunciate clearly” singing features. Teresa Teng’s songs have a strong influence on the Chinese mainland pop music, firstly, her songs have both features of Old Shanghai and New age pop, her songs are the bridge of old and new music in Chinese history; secondly, her singing style has an instructional influence on the first generation of pop singers in mainland of China, pop singers in mainland of China succeeded and recreated the “Teng style”; thirdly, her songs inspired the Chinese modern pop singers of how we are going to face the world in the future, this is the question which Chinese pop singers should think about.
