Abstract
TheimpactsoflandcoverchangesonregionalclimateinShaan—Gan—Ning(SGN)inwesternChinaweresimulated
with RegCM 3．Sensitivity experimentswereconductedbyreplacingcropgridswith differentnew land covertypesin
thekeyareaofSGNjwherethereturningcroplandtotree／grassprojecthasbeencarriedoutsince1999．Themodified
new land cover typesincludedesert，forest，shrub and grass． Theyrepresentdegraded，improved，andmaintained
vegetation coverwith naturalcanopy inthekey area．Resultsfrom threeindividualcasestudiesshow thattheland
coverchangecauseschangesintemperatureandterrestrialwatervariablesespeciallywithinthekeyarea，whilechanges
inprecipitationarefoundforalargerarea．Thestrongestchangesappearwherethecroplandisdegradedtobaresoil，
leading toincreasingtemperatureand decreasesin rainfall，evaporation and soilwater．Oppositechangesoccurwhen
croplandchanged intoforests，especiallywithstrongincreasesinsoilwater．W hencroplandchangedtograssandshrub
land，theclimaticchangesareclosertothosewithforestcover．Thisshowstheimportanceofimprovingandmaintaining
thevegetationinSGN fortheecosystem andregionalclimate．
