From Eqn. (6) it can be seen that the transition temperature
should vary linearly with the inverse of the grain size. 1…, a plot
of Tt against 1/d should be a straight line. Results for both
samples are shown in Fig. 1. For pure iron the data fall neatly on
a straight line. 2 …, the slope agrees well with the predicted value.
3 …, the data for the steel samples show a wide scatter. 4 …, the
values are still in the range expected from Eqn. 6. 5 … the fact that
the model does not include the effects of solute atoms, a
reasonable fit is 6 … observed for both samples. 7 …, a simple
model incorporating only the grain size and temperature can be
used to predict the transition temperature for pure, or nearly pure,
metals.
Scientific Writing: Lecture 7 #4
(exercise on linking ideas)
From Eqn. (6) it can be seen that the transition temperature
should vary linearly with the inverse of the grain size. Therefore,
a plot of T against 1/d should be a straight line. Results for both
t
samples are shown in Fig. 1. For pure iron the data fall neatly on
a straight line. Moreover, the slope agrees well with the predicted
value. However, the data for the steel samples show a wide
scatter. Nevertheless, the values are still in the range expected
from Eqn. 6. Despite the fact that the model does not include the
effects of solute atoms, a reasonable fit is thus observed for both
samples. Consequently, a simple model incorporating only the
grain size and temperature can be used to predict the transition
temperature for pure, or nearly pure, metal
