Intelligent Dynamic Simulation of Batch PROCESSES Esko K. Intelligent dynamic models have been developed with linguistic equations (LE) for two batch processes. Modelling was done by FuzzEqu toolbox. For SuperBatch pulp coking process, the measurements of the ABB’s cooking liquor analyser CLA 2000 were used. The concentrations of alkali, total dissolved solids and lignin are measured on-line during individual cooks in a batch digester house. The application is done in co-operation with ABB Industry and UPM Kymmene in an industrial pulp mill. According to the on-line tests, dynamic LE models suit very well for forecasting the cooking result. The purpose of the granulation application is to improve the control of the fluidized bed granulator Glatt WSG 5 and to estimate the increasing of granule size by simulation method using as a source material mixing of verapamil hydrochloride, microcrystalline cellulose and lactose monohydrate. The research is based on co-operation with Pharmaceutical Technology Division of Helsinki University and Orion Pharma. Measurements were collected during several experimental campaigns in a bench-scale fluidised bed granulator. The data based modelling succeeded well after the main process stages were divided into sub stages corresponding to shorter time periods. By controlling the interaction coefficients of the variables the model worked well also in rapidly changing areas. Granule size model based on the interaction between temperature of granule and air humidity is suitable for analysing different operating conditions.
