DRAFT Skills for Growth The Humber Employment and Skills Strategy 2014-2020 Foreword The vision Our overall vision for the Humber is quite simple: that the employment and skills system will support the business growth that will lead to a vibrant economy, thereby creating jobs and reducing unemployment. Alongside this, a workforce will be developed with the right skills to meet employers’ needs. We need to make sure that EVERY young person and adult receives appropriate support, advice and training, thereby helping them to realise their potential, so that they benefit from the jobs opportunities that will be created in the Humber region over the next 20 years. The Humber and its opportunities Nic Dakin MP said that through the Skills Commission’s work - ‘What is abundantly clear is that we have the best of everything in the Humber, but we do not have it constantly everywhere across the patch. If we are able, working together, to get everywhere in the Humber to the standard of the best in the Humber, we will – through a myriad of small changes – transform the region’. ‘And we need to do this, if we are to realise the huge opportunities that are within our grasp’. The opportunities over the next 20 years are immense and we know that up-skilling of local people is not a ‘quick fix’ and that companies will have to rely to begin with on some professional staff from outside the area. The Humber LEP realises that we need to build on the skills that our local people have and ensure that our young people in schools, colleges and university leave with the appropriate qualifications and skills to gain employment in these key sectors. DWP Enterprise Allowance and projects and programmes, such as Youth Enterprise and the Princes Trust, have shown that self-employment is a vital part of the local economy and that entrepreneurial skills are an important part of the skills mix.
