Higher strength/hardness metals tend to be brittle and sensitive to surface notches. These conditions can be overcome by shot peening F permitting the use of O high strength metals in fatigue prone E applications. Aircraft landing gear are often S designed to strength N levels of 300 ksi (2068 MPa) that incorporate O Figure 2- shot peening.
