The Part Family Manager (PFM) module is a 揼roup technology?or 揷lassification coding?system which is designed to provide the user with a quick review of all standard parts or existing custom-developed parts that serve the requirement at hand. PFM combines part family management with part characteristic management to help the user quickly find the exact part which best fits the need. Part families are logical groups of parts which serve a similar function. Part families may include part families, resulting in a hierarchical structure as shown on this slide. Part family structures may be designed by the customer or may be modeled after existing standards (such as ANSI or DIN). Part characteristics is the listing of key parameters that define each parts within a given family. For example, any part belonging to part family DIN 662 Rivets will have certain dimensional attributes such as length, diameter, head size, and so on. Part which belong to the Motors family would have a different set of characteristics. As a result of using PFM, overall time-to-market and cost is reduced because: - Existing parts which fit the requirement may already exist in inventory. Using them rather than purchasing or fabricating new parts saves money. - Standard parts are easily purchased at comparatively low cost. Designs should accommodate the usage of standard parts whenever possible to reduct cost. - Use of an existing part that serves the requirement may save a great deal of time and money that would otherwise be spent designing and fabricating a new part. - Creating a new part from an existing, similar part may save a great deal of time. An important aspect of PFM is its ability to manage part characteristics. Part characteristics is the set of attributes or properties that are common to all members of the family. All parts have general attributes (e.g., part number, status, owner) that help identify it per the organizational requirements, but each part has an additional se
