Abstract GroundPenetratingRadar(GPR)isaneffectiveNon-DestructiveTesting(NDT)technique
forhighwaypavementsurveys,which isableto acquirecontinuouspavementdata comparedwith
traditionalcoredrillingmethod.In thisstudy,weproposedan accurateand efficientmethod to es—
timatethethicknessofeachpavementlayerusinganair—coupledGPR system .Forthiswork,themain
difflcultiesareestimatingeachpavementlayer’stimedelayanddielectricconstant.、~ firstgivethe
basicsignalmodelforpavementevaluation,andthenpresentanIntrinsicModeFunctions(IMFs)
productdetectortodetermineeachpavementlayer’stimedelay.Thismethod isbasedon Empirical
ModeDecomposition(EMD),whichisanadaptivesignaldecompositionprocedureandprovedtobe
suitableofrsuppressingnoises in GPR signa1.The dielectric constantwasdetermined bymetal
reflectionmeasurement.Thelaboratoryandhighwayexperimentsillustratethattheproposedthickness
estimationmethodyieldsreasonableresult,thusmeetstherequirementsofpracticalhighwaypavem ent
surveywithmassiveGPR data.
