Interview- Baosteel May 9, 2009 Proper Diversification The development of a steel company is affected by many factors; and proper diversification, including both vertical and horizontal diversification, will make some solution possible by interplay of different but related segments, which we believe will contribute to a healthier and more competitive steel business. Now the company’s activities are concentrated in steel making, resource development, technical service, finance and production service, and are carried out through associated companies. Some of the sectors are generating very good profits; nevertheless the steel business remains fundamental and dominant. Subsidiaries Now there are 13 subsidiaries under the group, six of them are operating in the steel sector with manufacturing basis in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Xinjiang, Shandong and Hubei provinces. And there are several joint ventures which will start manufacturing in Hebei and Guangdong Provinces as well as in Brazil. The other subsidiaries are engaged in diversified business. For example, Baosteel Resources Co., Ltd is an arm responsible for resource development and supply; Baosteel Metals Co., Ltd is involved in metal processing; Shanghai Baosteel Engineering Equipment Co., Ltd is a key player that specializes in providing equipment engineering and manufacturing solutions.
