In 1620, the settlers sailed to America on the May flower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of religion. During their first winter, over half of the settlers died of starvation or illness. Those who survived began sowing in the first spring. All summer long they waited for the harvests with great anxiety, knowing that their lives and the future depended on the coming harvest. Finally the fields produced a big harvest. And therefore it was decided that a day of thanksgiving to the God be fixed. Years later, President of the United States proclaimed the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day every year. The pattern of the Thanksgiving celebration has never changed through the years. The big family dinner is planned months ahead. On the dinner table, the best and most attractive food are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. * Around the eighth century, the Christian church made November 1 All Saints Day to honor all of the saints that didnt have a special day of their own. The mass held on All Saints Day was called All Hallowmas (the mass of all Hallows -- saintly people). The night before was known as All Hallows Eve. Eventually this name became Halloween. On that day, the ghosts of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. Naturally, no one want to be possessed, so on the night of October 31, people would dress up and parade around the neighborhood, in order to frighten away the ghosts. In the United States, Halloween is a big day for kids because they can dress up whatever they want and go trick-treat house by house in the neighbo
