Howev- er ，its sensitivity to deformations of the patterns and the broad unsharp peaks are significant drawbacks. To reduce the infIuence of the noise and occIusion ，a noveI distance measurement method is proposed ，in which first order statistics of the cIose points between the tempIate and the image are used as a matching measurement. Instead of computing the distance of the gray vaIue of the two images ，it counts the number of the cIose pixeI pairs in the object image and the tempIate. The correIation curve got in this way is proved to be much sharper and the matching precision is improved significantIy. When above method is appIied to the processing of tracking ，the reasonabIe update of the tempIate wiII be the key. Based on a- bove simiIarity measurement method ，an adaptive tempIate updating strategy is aIso presented ，which is capabIe of seIectiveIy updating the correIation tempIate in response to the changes in an image seguence and enabIe
