Abstract The First Technical Consensus on NPS In 1990 the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful The first technical consensus on the technical and Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) agreed to a set of scientific aspects relating to the use of NPS in space nonbinding principles governing the use of nuclear was achieved in 1981 by the STSC Working Group on power sources (NPS) in outer space. Within the U.S. the Use of Nuclear Power Sources in Outer Space there was considerable discussion and review of these (WGNPS).2,3 This WGNPS report recognized the principles which led to the identification of a number of technical realities of providing risk reduction within the technical issues that could make the principles as uncertainties of an accident which is almost by originally stated either unworkable or impractical.
