REPORT BY MUMANET S Ten years have passed after the tragic day of the Chernobyl catastrophe which filled the hearts of the people with pain and made the international community review the strategy of nuclear power development. Analyses of the accident revealed the structural and organisational failures. Appropriate conclusions were made based upon the analyses results, and activities required to be performed were drawn up . The activities of the highest priority aimed at mitigation of the accident consequences , improvement of reliability of Chernobyl nuclear power reactors in operation . The Ukrytiye (Shelter) facility was constructed over the Chernobyl s Unit 4 which had been destroyed. The work on turning the Ukrytiye faculty into environmentally safe system and maintaining its safety status as high as practicable is underway . The long-term activities aimed at improvement of safe operation of the Chernobyl NPP and its further decommissioning are being carried out. GOSKOMATOM of Ukraine (Ukrainian State Committee on Nuclear Power Utilization) attaches paramount importance to the principles of the safe operation of nuclear power plants and their safety improvement which must be strictly observed.
