Trend Micro was the 1st company to recognize this trend and radically changed the industry with the introduction of gateway antivirus in 1996. Firewalls also emerged as means to separate the trusted and the untrusted network Generation 4 – However, firewalls have become more permeable. There are multiple entry points into an organizations’ network. Virus writers have not only leveraged this but also the new security vulnerabilities which have been propping up at an alarming pace. The new type of virus is the network virus, which takes advantage of security vulnerabilities and propagates rapidly at the network layer.
