Among the efforts made to overcome this reputation was the first attempt to establish a workable model of quality assurance system, which would enable companies to solve their quality problems. Unfortunately, the first standards, BS 4891 and BS 5179, were merely codes of practice and were difficult to apply to contractual situations. It was not until 1979 that the first successful generic model for quality assurance was established with the publication of BS 5750. This standard could be applied to contractual situations and, although it was written around manufacturing industries, could be applied in the service sector as well. The role of this standard in the recovery of the British industry can not be overestimated. Its huge success led the international community to adopting in 1987 the first version of the ISO 9000 series of standards, which were based on BS 5750. These standards were revised in 1994 in order to improve the requirements and to put more emphasis on the preventive nature of quality assurance. The ISO 9000 series of standards proved a great success and contributed greatly to the spread of quality thinking throughout the world. It was due to the fact that the model provided in the standard was relatively easy to adopt in any industry, whether manufacturing or service, and could be implemented within the environment of any culture. In fact, the standard sets a number of basic and simple requirements and encourages the companies to meet them in a way that is most suitable to their businesses’ operating philosophy and culture
