I. Transcendentalism marked the era from Earlier Romanticism into Later Romanticism or Romanticism on Puritan Soil. II. Transcendentalists preached the positive life. Romanticism on Puritan Soil (The American Renaissance) (1850-1861) Transcendentalism: A literary and philosophical movement, associated with Ralph Waldo Emerson and Margaret Fuller, asserting the existence of an ideal spiritual reality that transcends the empirical and scientific and is knowable through intuition. This movement focused on the human spirit and the spiritual relationship between humanity and nature. The Transcendentalists ultimately reached the conclusion that all forms of being are spiritually united through a shared universal soul, or Over-soul. III. Famous writers and works in this period: Emerson: Nature; The American Scholar; Self-Reliance Hawthorne: The Scarlet Letter Melville: Moby Dick Thoreau: Walden IV. American literature in this period develops from the imitation into symbolism.
