Abstract Sherwood Anderson is a great writer in modern American literature. Also he is a special writer in the history of American literature. He is best known for his work Winesburg Ohio, a collection of stories about characters in a fictional small town. The whole book with a loose structure has one unifying theme, and a functional figure Georgr Willard. It marked the peak of Anderson’s creation. The descriptions of the grotesque’s behavior and inner activities show the loneliness, indifference, alienation and their eager to be loved, understood, and to communicate with others. Expressionism is an important literary and artistic school which has been popular in some European countries and America from the very beginning to 1930s. In the expressionist work, the writers value the subjective world and they require peeling the seemingly objective reality away and explore subjective feelings hidden in human’s deep heart. They emphasize the spiritual feeling as emotion, thought etc. In Winesburg Ohio, with his delicate and incisive social perception, Anderson probes people’s inner world and show their loneliness and twistedness that social changes bring. This thesis is intended to analyze the expressionism in Winesburg Ohio to embody the inner world of the grotesques. This thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is mainly about Sherwood Anderson and Winesburg Ohio and the literature review. In the second chapter, the expressionism and its features are introduced. Chapter three reveals the expressionistic techniques such as repetition, exaggeration and epiphany the author uses in Winesburg Ohioa and also explore the inner activities of the grotesques through these techniques . The last chapter is the conclusion. In a word, this thesis presents the inner world of the grotesques by means of analyzing the expressionistic techniques, and the readers can have more profound understanding of Anderson’s Winesburg Ohio.
