Perhaps his “smallness” is a function of where he is and who he is expected to be rather than who he could be. He’s so tied to his lot in life， the mining life， which it never occurs to him that his more gifted sons could aspire to more. That they achieve more is a source of both pride and derision for Walter Morel.
