* * * * 2 * 2 * 2 * A variable speed drive consists of 2 main parts: (? 1) A power part (? 2) And a control part (? 3) The heart of the power part is the frequency converter, which is tasked with supplying the motor. (? 4) It also ensures its own protection and that of the motor. (? 5) The braking circuit provides dynamic braking for the motor should it be required. (? 6) There is a filter on the supply’s input to suppress electromagnetic interference. The control part contains the application control and the motor control elements. (? 7) The application control is responsible for automation functions such as starting/stopping and speed setting, to name just two. (? 8) It is fed with the speed ‘set point’ and the run/stop commands via Analog or Digital Inputs. (? 9) This can also be achieved using a remote controller connected to a communication port via, for example, the Can Open or Modbus field buses. (? 10) There is a keypad with a display, also called the Human Machine Interface, to programme, monitor, perform diagnostics and even control the motor. (? 11) The motor control sends the appropriate Pulse Width Modulated signal to the frequency converter in order to regulate speed and torque. (? 12) These are fed back by sensors to check the actual speed and torque. (? 13) If an external speed sensor is used, it is referred to as closed-loop motor control. * We will now look at how the “frequency converter” works in more detail. (? 1) The input rectifier rectifies the 3-phase network supply. (? 2) The DC voltage that is obtained is then filtered. (? 3) From this DC supply, an inverter rebuilds an AC supply to feed the motor. * A 6-diode rectifier bridge rectifies the 3-phase network voltage (? 1). This creates an almost smooth DC voltage.
