* Medical Application Plasma cells are derived from B lymphocytes and are responsible for the synthesis of the antibodies. Antibodies are immunoglobulins produced in response to penetration by antigens. Each antibody is specific for the one antigen that gave rise to its production and reacts specifically with molecules possessing similar epitopes (see Chapter 14: The Immune System Lymphoid Organs). The results of the antibody-antigen reaction are variable. The capacity of the reaction to neutralize harmful effects caused by antigens is important. An antigen that is a toxin (eg, tetanus, diphtheria) may lose its capacity to do harm when it combines with its respective antibody. * CLINICAL CORRELATIONS: Tumors of the adipose tissues may be benign or malignant. Lipomas are common benign tumors of adipocytes, whereas liposarcomas are malignant tumors of adipocytes. The latter form most commonly in the leg and in retroperitoneal tissues, although they may form anywhere in the body. The tumor cells may resemble either unilocular adipocytes or multilocular adipocytes, another indication that adult humans do indeed possess the two kinds of adipose tissue.
