To assure that the same problem does not occur in other processes or on other parts, institutionalize the corrective actions. GM requires the supplier to keep an updated Drill Wide Matrix. This is a document that addresses similar processes across all supplier manufacturing facilities and tier suppliers. Speaker Notes Key Points: No Problem Solving = No Improvement: If we don’t solve problems, we’re certainly not going to get better. Encourage Problems and Solutions: We need to encourage problems, but not only that--solutions. We do not want our people continuously coming to us with problems; we need answers. Provide the Necessary Training and Resources: It will not happen on its own. Have Patience: It is very easy to give answers to solve the problem quickly. Develop Your Subordinates: Develop your people’s skills to answer your questions, rather than coming to you for answers. Managers Should Have the Questions, Not the Answers: If you keep giving your employees the answers, you will keep doing that forever. Make Decisions Based on Fact, NOT Opinion (Emotion): CRITICAL point. Fact vs. opinion. Everyone has an opinion; that leads to emotion and conflict, and no resolution. Decisions need to be based on data. Encourage your people to gather the necessary data to base decisions on fact. DO NOT READ THE WHOLE LIST OF AREAS. Emphasize two or three examples Ask what areas the supplier has implemented. . Discuss how to document and communicate ideas.
