The Sound of Music Plot Summary Austria, during the 1930s. Maria is a postulant(志愿者) nun. She has an ardent love for life and takes great interest in nature and music. The strict disciplines and rules in the abbey really contradict her vivacious(活泼的) personality. Reverend mother(对女修道院院长的尊称 女院长夫人，院长嬷嬷) sees this and wisely sends her out to work as a governess. Captain Von Trapp is a widower with seven children and is very strict with them. Maria arrives with her music and vitality. Her vivacious personality affects the children. Music, happiness and laughter fill the house again. The children begin to love Maria and she also wins the heart of the captain. Then the Baroness comes to visit them. The Baroness notices the growing love between Maria and Captain, and tries to interfere by hinting to Maria that her love for Captain is unrequited(无报答的). Remembering her own pledge to God, Maria immediately starts for the abbey, only leaving a note to say good-bye. Maria’s leave also takes away the happiness and music of the family. The children become cheerless and depressed. The news of Father’s marriage with the Baroness upsets them and they miss Maria. They go to the abbey to see Maria but disappointedly return for she is in seclusion(隔离). But their visit also leads to another result. Reverend Mother asks her to face the reality and to pursue God’s direction, that is, to go back and find out her true life. Maria is whole-hearted welcomed by the children as well as by the Captain. The Captain realizes that whom he really loves is not the Baroness but Maria. He decidedly breaks off the engagement with the Baroness. And the two true lovers unite and make up a new happy family.
