* After you create a new virtual machine and load and configure the guest operating system, you install VMware Tools. VMware Tools is a suite of utilities that enhances the performance of the virtual machine’s guest operating system and improves management of the virtual machine. The installers for VMware Tools for Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and NetWare guest operating systems are built into ESX host as ISO image files. The most visible benefit of VMware Tools is that you get better video performance and you can move the mouse pointer freely in and out of the console window. However VMware Tools also installs other important components. The VMware Tools service is a service that performs various duties within the guest operating system. The service starts automatically when the guest operating system boots. The functions that the service performs include: Passing messages from ESX host to the guest operating system Passing information between the guest operating system and a VMware scripting API script Sending a heartbeat to the ESX host so that it knows the guest operating system is running Synchronizing the time in the guest operating system with the time in the host operating system Running scripts and executing commands in a virtual machine and Grabbing and releasing the mouse cursor on Windows guests. On Linux and Solaris guests the VMware user process, controls the grabbing and releasing of the mouse cursor and fits the guest screen resolution to the host. VMware Tools does not install the service and user process on NetWare operating systems. Instead, it installs the vmwtool program, a command line utility to control the grabbing and releasing of the mouse cursor. VMware Tools also includes a set of VMware device drivers to improve graphical, network and mouse performance, as well as provide efficient memory allocation between virtual machines. The VMware Tools control panel provides a management interface so you can modify settings, shrink virtual
