Henry Fielding(1707-1754) Background With the advent of the 18th century, in England, as in other European countries, there sprang into life a public movement known as the Enlightenment(启蒙运动). Modern English novel began in the 18th century and gave the world such novelists as Defoe, Swift, Richardson, Fielding, and so on.
