Henry Fielding(1707-1754) Background With the advent of the 18th century, in England, as in other European countries, there sprang into life a public movement known as the Enlightenment(启蒙运动). Modern English novel began in the 18th century and gave the world such novelists as Defoe, Swift, Richardson, Fielding, and so on. Henry Fielding and Tobias George Smollett who became the real founders of the genre(流派) of the bourgeois realistic novel in England and Europe. An Introduction to Henry Fielding The greatest novelist of the 18th century and is one of he most artistic that English literature has produced A versatile(多才多艺的) man: a novelist, a dramatist(26 plays), an essayist, a political pamphleteer, a learned authority on law and an able and efficient magistrate and a political economist Life He was born in 1707, in the family of a poor general He educated at Eton College(伊顿公学) and took e degree at the University of Leyden(莱顿公学) From 1729 to 1737 he was a theatrical manager and playwright in London In 1734 he married Charlotte Cradock, who is the model for Sophia in Tom Jones, and becomes the heroine of Amella Licensing Act of 1737 ended Fielding’s career as a dramatist In 1740 he was called to the bar In 1743 Charlotte died.
