It is located at Zhangguangcailing Mountain to the northeast of Jingpo Lake and from the mountain peak a fantastic view of many large craters can be seen. In total, there are 10 craters situated throughout the crater forests. The area of the crater forests is 40 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide. Because of natural formation of beauty, the Underground Forests, anther name of the crater forests, is a place you just have to see by yourself. On the cliff of one special crater many trees grow and you may wonder why trees grow on the cliff. Well, long, long time ago, the rock in the crater mixed with volcanic ash which formed fertile soil. With an average temperature of four degrees centigrade, conditions are very damp there, just perfect for trees to grow. Also excrement left by animals is good for the soil. Another fact is that many kinds of birds inhabit the forest, and scatter many different kinds of seeds in and around the craters. Among 10 craters, Crater 3 is the largest. It is 550 meters in diameter and 200 meters in depth. A strange fact is that due to abnormal temperature at the bottom of the craters, thin ice can be found in summer and spring water in winter.
