The limitations of current empirical studies and directions of future research in China’s context will be discussed. Then I will talk about my recent research on the role of Christianity in the modernization of the Chinese education system. This study utilizes historical documents on the Christian evangelism in the early twenty centuries in China as well as a large county-level dataset on the education and economic characteristics in 1920.
