Stock prices and interest rates over different periods of history provide useful data for testing historical as well as economic theories. This overview explores selected examples from the author’s experience with a variety of historical price series: art prices, housing prices, stock prices and bond prices.?The challenges of using prices are also discussed, including problems of collection, selection biases and survival biases.

Culture, Religion and Economic Development
In this lecture, I will first give a critical review of the growing literature on the role of culture and religion in the process of economic development. The limitations of current empirical studies and directions of future research in China’s context will be discussed. Then I will talk about my recent research on the role of Christianity in the modernization of the Chinese education system. This study utilizes historical documents on the Christian evangelism in the early twenty centuries in China as well as a large county-level dataset on the education and economic characteristics in 1920.
