Born in London on 28 November 1757 the son of a hosier. William did not attend school, and was educated at home by his mother. At 24 he married Catherine Boucher.Later, in addition to teaching Catherine to read and write, he trained her as an engraver. Poetical Sketches 1783 : his earliest poems, full of joy, laughter, love and harmony Songs of Innocence 1789 : present a happy and innocent world, though with its evils and sufferings The Marriage of Heaven and Hell 1790 : his first prophetical(预言的) work and most important prose(散文) work; explore the relationship of the contraries Songs of Experience 1794 : present a world of misery, poverty, disease, war and repression(镇压) with a melancholy(忧郁的) tone In August 1803 Blakes trouble with authority came to a head, when he was involved in a physical altercation(争执) with a soldier called John Schofield. In 1804 Blake returned to London and began to write and illustrate Jerusalem, his most ambitious work Jerusalem(耶路撒冷): The Emanation of the Giant Albion 1820 : his longest illuminated(说明性的) work; expound(解释) his theory of Imagination Later in his life Blake began to sell a great number of his works, particularly his Bible illustrations, to Thomas Butts. He died in his seventieth year. From a young age, William Blake claimed to have seen visions. The first may have occurred as early as the age of four . Blake claimed to experience visions throughout his life. They were often associated with beautiful religious themes and imagery, and may have inspired him further with spiritual works and pursuits. Certainly, religious concepts and imagery figure centrally in Blakes works. God and Christianity constituted the intellectual centre of his writings, from which he drew inspiration. debates about Blakes visions William Wordsworth commented, There was no doubt that this poor man was mad, but there is something in the madness of this man which interests me more than the sanity of Lord Byron and Walter Scott.
