However, inefficiency of project management was caused by the limitation of current mining project management methods and tools, thus affected the coal industry production efficiency. As an advanced revolutionary technology， BIM will certainly bring historical changes to the engineering management of the coal mining industry. It is able to manage the mining engineering process through the use of BIM management information system and 3D model with various underground mining data, it changes the business process and the cooperation way and enables each participant of the project to collaborate more effectively, and plays a positive role in the project management in the whole life cycle. In order to improve the problems existing in the current coal mine extraction project management, and improve the efficiency of coal mine extraction objective management, this paper chooses the application of BIM in coal mining project management as the research direction by way of literature review, qualitative analysis,case study, through in-depth analysis of different definitions of BIM, arrives at a conclusion that BIM is not only 3D-model results but also processes. Meanwhile, this paper summarizes several connotation elements of BIM in depth analysis, which includes BIM’s information carrier-BIM 3D model, BIM’s means of realization-BIM software, and BIM vitality (the entire life cycle of the project).
