The empire was conquered by theRoman Army and a Roman way of life was established in these conquered countries. In Rome’s early years, the state lived in fear of its more powerful neighbour, Carthage. The I. Library Work Carthaginians were great traders in the Mediterranean Sea and as the Romans wanted to expand into this trading zone, a clash was inevitable. By 146 BC, the Romans were strong enough to capture the city of Carthage in Northern Africa. Carthage was burned to the ground and all signs of the city were destroyed by the Romans as a sign that the power of the Carthaginians had disappeared forever. I. Library Work At its height under Trajan (98-117), the Roman Empire included W. and S. Europe, north of the Sahara (Africa), and SW Asia. The Roman Empire split permanently into East and West in 395 AD. The Western Empire, with its capital at Rome, fell in 476 AD as a result of international troubles and barbarian invasions. I.
