Changes taking place in English grammar Grammar does not remain static , it also changes with the times . Descriptive grammar –how the grammar is used by the people Prescriptive grammar – it tells you what you should use in order to produce accurate utterances . II. Deductive and inductive learning of grammar 1 deductive grammar teaching ---rules given first →explain the rules with examples →students apply the rules to given situations(practices) 2 inductive grammar teaching --- given structures in authentic context →work out the rules →practices III. Approach in teaching grammar 1. Presentation --In this stage Teacher introduces new language in particular communicative situations, focusing on its meaning and form . 2 practice – In this stage students work through activities from controlled to free in order to practice the new language in different situations. Focus is on accuracy. 3 production – In this stage students are given chances to use the new language freely and incorporate it into their existing language. The focus is on use and fluency. IV Principles of grammar instruction 1) motivation principle Appropriate topics, relevant to students age, cognitive level and language proficiency.
