“FLTRP CUP” NATIONAL ENGLISH DEBATING COMPETITION Introduction Adjudicators/Time keepers Parliamentary Debating Style of the Competition The Debate Format Video Introduction “FLTRP Cup” National English Debating Competition is the only national English debating event in China. Inaugurated in 1997, the Competition is organized by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (hereafter referred to as “FLTRP”), coordinated by English Speaking Union and China Universities English Speaking Association (now China English Language Education Association). Adjudicators Very, Very Important These are the people who will be listening to your arguments, making the decision about who has won or lost the debate. Not only be nice to them, but perform well in front of them. Time Keeper You never want to go over time. You should give attention to the time keeper. Ring the bell, keep you track of time. Nice to them, give you the wrong time. Parliamentary Debating The Competition adopts parliamentary debating style. Parliamentary Debating The Competition shall be run in two main phases: Phase one, known as the ‘Preliminary Rounds’(循环赛) and Phase two, known as the ‘Knock-out Rounds’（淘汰赛） More Information will be explained later. The Format of Debate A debate shall be adjudicated by a panel comprising an odd number of adjudicators, usually 3. One of these shall be designated as Chairperson by the organizers, and will function as Speaker. It’s compulsory for the tutor of each team to act as adjudicator in the Competition.
