Homologous recombination, which occurs during meiosis, exchanges DNA between the two chromosomes of each individual before reproduction. As a result, the chromosome passed to the grandchild by each parent is a unique combination of two chromosomes from different individuals. Homologous recombination occurs in other contexts as well.
