Appreciation of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Hannibal—a place cultivating his cheerful disposition as a boy When be wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain turned Hannibal, Missouri—which he later described as a “white town drowsing in the sunshine of a summer’s morning” — into an American literary Mecca. No other town in the country has stronger associations with an author, and Twain readily acknowledged its role in his success. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer Many of the stories take place in Hannibal, Missouri. The small wooden house where he lived there as a boy still stands there. Next to the house is a wooden fence. It is the kind described in Twain’s book, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” published in 1876. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer In that story, Tom has been told to paint the fence. He does not want to do it. But he acts as if the job is great fun. He tricks other boys into believing this. His trick is so successful that they agree to pay him money to let them finish his work. “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” is considered one of the best books about an American boy’s life in the 1800s. His Life Brought up in the small town of Hannibal, Missouri, on the Mississippi River; Left school at 12 because of the death of his father; Once worked as a printer’s apprentice, a tramp printer, a silver miner, a steamboat pilot, a gold-washer, and a frontier journalist; Became nationally famous with “Jumping Frog”; Went to east where he met Olivia Langdon and married; Tragic events of his later life changed him and his writing a little; Later been a lecturer, traveler, businessman, novelist and autobiographer; Led an active life in the very center of the American experiences.
