Technical Drawing Part 1

SECIT – Technical Drawing Part 1 Dr. Hui Leng Choo SEB 446 huileng.choo@ Sources: Dr Carsten Tietje, Dr Kuan Yoong Chan, Dr Kay Bond 1 Today’s Lecture Why is technical drawing important? Equipment required Drawing requirements e.g. title block, borders etc. Introduction to Orthographic Projection (First and third angle) 2 Why is it important? To communicate design ideas. It is used in all engineering fields: Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Architecture, Aerospace etc. Engineers provide all of the information needed to make or fabricate their products in an engineering drawing. 3 Equipment required The following equipment are recommended for technical drawing: Pencil (HB and 2H) Ruler Eraser Protractor Compasses Set squares ESSENTIAL OPTIONAL 4 Typical technical drawing (3rd angle) 5 Isometric view (not always required) Orthographic Projection 6 Projection Plane Projection Lines A 2-D projection of an object using parallel projection lines that run from the edges and corners of an object out to a projection plane. Orthographic Projection Engineering system of drawing in industry. The projection lines from an object are perpendicular to the projection plane. This method most accurately describes the part being drawn. Surfaces parallel to the plane of projection are true sizes on the drawing. As one view may only represent the height and width of a part and not the depth, additional views are required (3 views are usually required). The 3 different views are referred to as Front Elevation, Plan, and End Elevation. 7 Orthographic Views 8 Top view Rear view Right view Left view Front view Bottom view Orthographic Views 9 Source: http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/landrigan/drafting/Technical_Drawing.htm Glass box Orthographic Views 10 Source: http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/landrigan/drafting/Technical_Drawing.htm Orthographic Projection The views are positioned relative to each other according to either of the two schemes: 1st angle projection (object placed in first quadrant) 3
