ASTUDY ON LEXICALATTRITIONVARIABLES IN THE SECOND LANGUAGE ABSTRACT In recent years,research on hnguage attrition becomes iiIore and more popular to linguists and schohrs at home and abroad.On the basis of the critical threshold hypothesis and the regression hypothesis of language attrition,this thesis aims to explore lexical attrition variables in the second language and to fmd om learners’ lexical attrition features.Besides,SOIIle strategies and suggestions 011 L2 lexical learning are also propo sed.Therefore,adopting a qualitative method,this study intends to answer the following questions: 1.Are there any structural features in second language attrition process?If there are,what are they? 2.Besides gender,age and level of attainment,are there any other variables influencing lexical attrition in this study7 3.How canthese variables be guided to have positive effects on SL learning? This study selects two coliege juniors who are non-Engfish majors participating in a six-month longitudinal survey.Four research instruments are employed.including questionmires ofbackground information,questionnaires of motivation and attkudes, vocabulary proficiency tests used to measure English vocabulary level and in-depth interview designed to check information collected in questionnaires.The vocabulary test iS administered every two months and the interview every two weeks.Data are analyzed by both qualitative and quantitative methods. The results show that the words that learners use frequently attrite last in lexical slructure in the attrition process.Motivation,attitude,language put and role of iIls订uctors are found to have an effect on L2 lexical attritiorL Moreover,related suggestions are offered from vocabulary learning and attainment in three facets:depth of VOCabulary,breadth of vocabulary and retrieval speed of vocabulary and from language learning and attainment Oil the basis of three variables:motivation,attitudes and language input.
