ABSTRACT
In recent years,with the promotion and development of cultural teaching
philosophy in foreign language teaching(FLT),linguists and educators around the
world believed firmly that understanding the culture of foreign languages and the
difference between various cultures is an indispensable part of FLT.But the truth is
that most researches on cultural teaching are still mainly concentrated in the target
language?一English cultural teaching,which has caused a great ignorance of native
culture.It’S no doubt that it is a must for English learners to get familiar with the
culture of English—speaking countries,but English learners are also invited to
introduce or interpret the concepts or contexts related to their own culture,which is
certainly applied to Chinese English learners.
However,in the real communicative process,Chinese college students are able to
express foreign cultural phenomenon in a relatively fluent way,while they fail to
introduce their nati ve culture freely to foreign friends as a result of the long influence
of”Westem Cultural Colonialism”in college English teaching.The weak competence
to express Chinese culture in English will also lead to communication
barriers and
cultural misunderstandings.In view of this,it is very necessary for US to investigate
the present competence of non-English—major college students,who are the majority
of Chinese English learners,to express Chinese culture in English.
Many researches on this topic have been done,most of which show that Chinese
college students are not skilled at expressing Chinese culture
in English and Chinese
culture is in an awkward position in EFL.However,most of these researches are
carried out either in prestigious universities or key higher institutions.The study on
the competence to express Chinese culture
in English of students from local
institutions is relatively deficient.Therefore,it is still very necessary to do more such
researches in local institutions,as the students there are more
