FATIGUE STRENGTH OF METALLIC AND COMPOSITE MATERIALS
UNDER REPEATED TENSION–COMPRESSION
V. P. Golub, V. I. Krizhanovskii, A. D. Pogrebnyak, and E. S. Kochetkova UDC 539.376
The fatigue strength of metallic and composite materials under combined static and cyclic loading is analyzed. The analysis is based on limit-state models, which allow us to describe limiting-stress diagrams
of all known shapes, including convex, rectilinear, S-shaped, and concave. The fatigue strength of the following materials is evaluated: carbon and alloy steels, aluminum alloys, creep-resistant nickel alloys, unidirectional composites, plastic laminates, glassfiber-reinforced plastics, and polymers. The calculated results and experimental data are in satisfactory agreement

Introduction. In problems of evaluating the fatigue strength of materials and structural members, the asymmetry of the
stress cycle is usually accounted for based on isochronic limiting-stress diagrams [5, 9, 11, 12, 15–17]. Such diagrams are used to
derive analytic relationships between the cyclic and static stress components for a fixed number of cycles to failure. Linear and
parabolic relationships have become most common in the practice of calculation. It is agreed that experimental data fall within a
narrow range between the normalized limiting curves with exponents 1 and 2, respectively.
In reality, however, the shape of experimental limiting-stress diagrams may vary
