* 5.The role of the teacher The role of the teacher is that of technician or engineer. The teachers task is to focus the students attention, and provide exercises to help them develop language facility; however, to ensure their self-reliance, the teacher should only help the students as much as is strictly necessary. As Gattegno says, The teacher works with the student; the student works on the language. For example, teachers will often give students time to correct their own mistakes before giving them the answer to a question. Teachers also avoid praise or criticism, as it can discourage students from developing self-reliance. 6.Types of learning and teaching activities Learning tasks and activities in the Silent Way have the function of encouraging and shaping student oral response without direct oral instruction from or unnecessary modelling by the teacher. Basic to the method are simple linguistic tasks in which the teacher models a word, phrase, or sentence and then elicits learner responses. Learners then go on create their own utterances by putting together old and new information. Charts, rods, and other aids may be used to elicit learner responses. Teacher modelling is minimal, although much of the activity may be teacher directed. Responses to commands, questions, and visual cues thus constitute the basis for classroom activities. * Advantages: 1.Students are the main part of learning,emphasises learning more than teaching. 2.Using special instruments to teach,which is good for students. 3.It’s full of creativity. 4.Consistent prccess of making errors,it’s good for students’individualism and responsibility. 7、Advantages Disadvantages Disadvantages: 1.Ignore the direction of teachers. 2.It may waste a lot of time. 8.Teaching techniques Just as the name implies, silence is a key tool of the teacher in the Silent Way.
