* Battery Safety Batteries can explode Batteries contain Sulphuric acid and the chemical reaction between the acid and the electrodes produces a potentially explosive gas (Hydrogen). Under normal conditions the amount of gas produced is low and for a well maintained battery, the gas vents away naturally. The battery above exploded during jump starting and a small blue flame was observed on the battery just before it exploded. The explosion hurled debris and Sulphuric acid into the face of the driver. Battery Safety Avoidance It is better to avoid being in a position where jump starting is necessary. Early signs of defective batteries such as slow starting, signs of corrosion on the battery or cables, batteries becoming warm, batteries producing an acrid odour etc. should be dealt with straight away by service or replacement. For heavy vehicles, manufacturers recommend battery service/inspection by a competent person every six weeks. For cars check the owners manual for service requirements. Battery Safety Cautionary Notes Poorly maintained or defective batteries are more likely to produce an excess of gas which is potentially explosive if an ignition source is produced. If a cell fails the other cells can become overloaded causing the battery to heat up and boil the electrolyte solution (water/acid). If a battery is found in a hot condition, or steam is observed arising, NEVER attempt to jump start. It is dangerous to move a battery in this condition and should be allowed to cool before removal. Avoid sources of ignition around batteries. Never allow tools to cross connect the electrodes and cause a short circuit. Never lean over a battery with the head or face exposed to a potential explosion.
