Chapter 7 Love and Marriage Li Pengfei Faculty of College English Teaching Weddings are important in nearly every culture. And every culture has its own wedding traditions. This chapter looks at some customs from different cultures. It also looks at the history of some wedding customs. Teaching Objectives ● Identify arguments of Reading 1 ● Find the topic sentences to understand the main ideas of Reading 2 ● key language points and grammatical structures ● Make and use an “Idea File” to increase their creativity and store ideas for writing ● Grasp the skill of amplification in translation The Traditional Western Marriage . Romance is often associated with love and marriage. “I do.” to Americans, those two words carry great meaning especially if you say them at your own wedding. The key elements 基本组成部分 utilized in most Western wedding ceremonies, in their most common order, are: 1 Introduction, Opening, or Invocation in which the minister typically announces the purpose of the gathering, indicates the names of the bride and groom, welcomes the guests and solicits 请求,恳求 them to participate in the ceremony by their presence and, perhaps, their prayers. 2 Main Body in which the minister ruminates 沉思,反复思考 on the meaning of marriage and the significance of the bride and groom’s decision to join together in wedlock 婚姻 . The minister may also share more casual remarks about the bride and groom as he or she has come to know them, and about the fitness of their union. This portion of the ceremony might also include religious or other readings by the minister or by other persons who have been asked by the bride and groom to speak 3 Introduction to the Vows in which the minister explains the significance of the vows which the couple are going to exchange. 4 Vows in which the bride and groom individually affirm their commitment to each other, in response to questions posed by the minister; the responses usually take the form of “I do” or “I will”.
