Malvernsizer – Sample preparation and Measurement Dispersion solution. Use Sodium Pyrophosphate (Na4P2O7 . 10 H2O) as dispersant. Prepare 2 dispersions solution with different concentration of Na4P2O7 . 10 H2O 1. 10 gram per liter (10 gpl) P2O5 solution of Sodium Pyrophosphate (TSPP) TSPP contains 31.8% by weight of P2O5. To make a 1 liter of solution add 32 grams of TSPP in 1000 ml of distilled water and thoroughly mix it in. Store the solution in a glass or plastic container. 2. 0.05 gram per liter (0.05gpl) P2O5 solution of Sodium Pyrophosphate (TSPP) To make a 1 liter of solution add 0.16 grams of TSPP in 1000 ml of distilled water and thoroughly mix it in. Store the solution in a glass or plastic bottle. Test Samples Preparation 1. From Dry Pigment Powder In a 50 ml plastic beaker put in 40 ml of 0.05gpl P2O5. TSPP solution. Add about 0.1 gram of dry TiO2 powder and mix with a glass stirrer. Then intensely mix the sample for 120 seconds using a Ultrasonic probe. ( The length of time and ultrasonic intensity depend on the type and power of the Ultrasonic processer and this will have to be established by multi-sample testing) The sample is now ready for particle sizing with the Malvernsizer. 2. From wet pigment slurry. In a 50 ml plastic beaker put in 40 ml of 0.05gpl P2O5. TSPP solution. Add about 0.1 gram of TiO2, determined by the concentration of the slurry, and mix with a glass stirrer. Then intensely mix the sample for 120 seconds using an Ultrasonic probe. (The length of time and ultrasonic intensity depend on the type and power of the Ultrasonic processer and this will have to be established by multi-sample testing) The sample is now ready for particle sizing with the Malvernsizer.
